Erosion Control

Major flooding events in 2002 and 2013, as well as other incidents of heavy local rainfall, have demonstrated the importance of decentralised flood controls for the Erzgebirge/Vogtland Nature Park. An exemplary project in the border region around Neuhausen, Seiffen and Deutschneudorf (Germany) and Nová Ves v Horách and Hora Svaté Kateřiny (Czech Republic) analysed the area’s terrain, soil conditions, cultivation methods alongside other factors – such as the landscape characteristics and tourism concerns – to develop proposals for erosion and flood controls.

Individual measures proposed for erosion and flood controls were subsequently implemented by landowners, farmers, the Zschopau/Flöhatal and Mulde/Flöha Landscape Conservation Associations and the nature park. In addition to soil-conserving utilisation of the land, these measures included interrupting slopes with strips of vegetation and hedgerow planting.

An upcoming project will use watercourse mapping to develop a near-natural and erosion-controlling approach for the riverside zones of second-order watercourses in the municipality of Holzhau, a district of Rechenberg-Bienenmühle.

The closing off of drainage ditches in the nature park’s many moors supports water retention in the landscape and also contributes to flood control.
