Most of the nature park is covered by forests. However, the biotopes and structures of the open country-side also occupy a prominent position in the landscape. Hedges play an important role in the regions used for agriculture.

Although they only take up a small amount of space, hedges provide a diverse range of living conditions. Thanks to their large surface area, the wealth of nooks and hiding places, and the abundance and variety of nourishment available, hedgerow habitats are among the richest in species and individuals. Hedges are refuges for many kinds of birds, insects, mammals and plants. They help to maintain the ecological bal-ance and are indispensable in connecting different biotopes with one another.

Hedgerow landscapes in the Erzgebirge/Vogtland Nature Park can be found around Pöhlberg/Annaberg (field terraces), at Johanngeorgenstadt (Am Grauen Mann hedge area) and Pöhla, around Mildenau and Schöneck, and at Großrückerswalde.

The nature park supports the various efforts to maintain and improve existing hedges, and to establish new hedgerows in previously cleared areas. For example, the Zschopau/Flöhatal Landscape Conservation Association has worked with the nature park and the local branch of NABU since 1997 to plant over seven kilometres of hedgerows in the area around Ansprung and Zöblitz.

In 2003, a similar project was launched in collaboration with the Mittleres Erzgebirge Landscape Conservation Association in Crottendorf. The project supports the return of buckthorn to the Erzgebirge via the biotope network.

A new hedgerow was created in Blumenau in the Olbernhau district in 2018 with the support of Marktplatz Natur/EUROPARC Germany and ViO.
